South Africa - Arrival

02.02.2009 - Travel

The flight runs despite children in front of and behind us, amazingly quiet. We could still sleep a few of the 13 hours flight and watch movies. Arrival with 6h delay but at 23 degrees. And Fredi could sleep in and had to pick us up only at 12. The passport control took a long time, but we took it easy and marveled at the good standard of the airport. Finally arrived at the counter we inquire after the passport control also after our luggage. We should ask at the baggage claim at the counter, leave there the phone number and come back tomorrow. Grumbl. On the way past the baggage carousel, Corinne still wants to take a look. I have finished with the luggage and head for the luggage counter. But Corinne's intuition was right, she waves at me from the baggage carousel and heaves the red, plasticized suitcase off the belt... and my airplane has also made it. YES!!!

Fredi received our SMS and was in time at the exit. A warm welcome to South Africa! We make our way to the car with the luggage. It is windy and warm. Very pleasant. On the short drive to Durbanville we get from Fredi already a first introduction to the local population groups and their (house) building styles. Colored here in mini houses, Blacks there mostly in corrugated iron boxes. Hardly mixing, but gang wars. But everything is not so bad. The longer we drive, the more noble the area becomes. Passing 3 hospitals and about 30 churches we reach the house of Chrigi and Fredi: Aristea 7. Inconspicuous from the street, all the more impressive from the inside. And the garden! A small, quiet paradise.

The house cat "Hotzenplotz", or also called "Tiger", welcomed us with purring and cuddling. A wonderful pool in the middle of the large garden invites you to swim. Wendolin, the house turtle, has made himself comfortable in the shade and defies the heat motionless. We sit down on the veranda and enjoy the temperature, the climate and the white wine. Chrigi joins us, but unfortunately has caught a Swiss flu from another Swiss visit.

Our bedroom has direct access to the veranda. We are already looking forward to sleeping in. The flight was not really relaxing. But first a short walk to get to know the surroundings. All beautiful villas, but with high fences and partly with sharp guard dogs. Wonderful sunset. The plants on the roadside are wonderfully tropical. The grass mostly yellow where it is not watered. Everything seems very clean and well-kept in the area here. Nearby is the school, which we heard from the garden. Apparently today was a sports day à la Swiss schools.

We eat Swiss risotto and with Pullet on the veranda and marvel at the blue-lit pool after dark. Shortly before dozing off, we make the short walk to the bedroom, where we meet an old colleague again: Tiger has made himself comfortable at the foot of the bed. Naughty bussie!
